A few days ago reports emerged of a Ph.D. student who left school to sell fried chicken in his hometown. When Hon Hai Chairman Terry Gou caught wind of the news, he slammed the individual, saying a tax should be levied on people who waste educational resources.
Mr. Sung is responsible for everything from greeting customers to chopping meat and frying the chicken cutlets. He was a Ph.D. student at National Chengchi University, though he abandoned his role as a teaching assistant and lecturer to move back to his hometown and open this shop. Hon Hai Chairman Terry Gou thinks he made the wrong decision and his current career path is a waste of educational resources.

He studied and the nation paid for most of his education. He should be willing to give back. Now he wants to sell fried chicken? He doesn’t need to have gone to graduate school to do this. I think it’s a waste of money, so I would want to levy a new tax for this waste of human resources and training.

I want to do my best in everything I do. And I don’t think we should look at one job as being better than the next. Everyone should just work hard at what they do.
Gou says that any high school or junior high school student could sell fried chicken. But Sung believes he was forced into this situation because of the poor economy. He thinks advanced degrees could even hinder job prospects.

In the past there was work waiting for us, but now having a doctoral degree can make it even more difficult to find a job.
After joining this fried chicken franchise, Sung’s income fell by NT$40,000 compared to what he earned at the university. But Sung plans to expand his business from the ground up and hopes his future is bright.
