A meeting of the legislature’s Internal Administration Committee descended into chaos yesterday, after Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) legislators accused their Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) colleagues of “conspiring” with activist groups to disrupt a committee meeting a day earlier.

The KMT legislative caucus said it would file a disciplinary report on DPP Legislator Pasuya Yao (姚文智), as it accused him of neglecting his duties as committee convener on Wednesday during a legislative review of the Referendum Act (公民投票法).

They said that Yao’s decision to allow Academia Sinica researcher Huang Kuo-chang (黃國昌) to attend the meeting as an observer threatened the personal safety of KMT Legislator Chang Ching-chung (張慶忠), with Huang launching a series of verbal attacks at Chang after the meeting.

Wearing a face mask in a gesture of protest, Chang yesterday demanded an explanation from Yao, saying he was extremely frightened by Huang and was unable to sleep because of the incident.

SIX HABITS OF CONFIDENT PEOPLE

FEARLESS CHILDREN OFTEN TURN INTO INSECURE ADULTS. HOW DO PEOPLE MANAGE TO STAY CONFIDENT IN THE FACE OF FAILURE?

When my son was 4, he wore a superhero cape. All of the time. I vividly remember a trip to Home Depot when he had dressed himself in shorts and a shirt, cowboy boots, swim goggles, gardening gloves, and the cape. Even though he attracted plenty of stares, he walked through the store very sure of himself and his wardrobe choice.

Many of us outgrow our childhood ideals, but why is it we also often leave behind the sense of confidence that accompanied them?

Do colours really warp our behaviour?

Red paint is meant to inflame our passions while blue and green keeps us calm – but Claudia Hammond finds that their true influence is not what you’d expect.

We can spend hours choosing the right paint colour for a room to create just the mood we want. We pore over paint charts and bring home tester pots. Doctors’ surgeries are painted white to give us that sense of clinical cleanliness, fast food shops are red or yellow and some prison cells are painted pink in the hope of reducing aggression.

We might think we know which colours do what. The idea that red wakes us up or blue calms us down is deeply engrained in Western culture - to the point that many consider it a fact. But do they really change our behaviour in the ways that we assume?

When it comes to scientific research, the results are mixed and at times contested. Red is the colour that gets studied most often and tends to be compared with either blue or green. Some studies have found that people do better on cognitive tasks when faced with red rather than blue or green; others show the opposite. The mechanism most often cited is conditioning. The idea is that if you repeatedly have a particular experience surrounded by a certain colour, then you eventually begin to associate that colour with the way you were feeling or behaving. It’s been suggested that a school career spent reading your teacher’s red writing circling your mistakes forever makes you link red with danger and this is underlined by the fact that poisonous fruits are often red. Blue meanwhile is more likely to be associated with calmer situations like staring at the sea or marvelling at a big blue expanse of sky.

French supermarket introduces lumpy and misshapen fruit and vegetables - sold at a 30% discount - to combat food waste

  • Intermarché launched Inglorious Fruits and Vegetables earlier this year
  • It wanted to prove that unattractive produce is just as edible
  • The supermarket gave the ugly fruits and veg their own aisle
  • The project was a success with the store almost selling out

It is well known that we eat with our eyes as well as our stomach, however one French supermarket is attempting to re-educate our perspectives on lumpy, ugly, misshapen fruit and vegetables with a new initiative.

The third largest supermarket chain in France Intermarché, launched a campaign earlier this year that sought to put an end to food waste.

Inglorious Fruits and Vegetables celebrates the 'ugly' produce that is often thrown away by growers and considered unfit for consumption.

Resource: http://www.medicaldaily.com/microwaves-are-bad-you-5-reasons-why-microwave-oven-cooking-harming-your-health-250145

Reaching for a frozen entrée from your freezer, reading the simple directions on the back, and popping it into the microwave oven can lead to a meal that took a total of three minutes. And it's a modern convenience utilized in many American households. According to The Southwest Museum of Engineering, Communication and Computation (SMECC), more than 95 percent of American homes own a microwave oven because it is seen as “almost impossible/pretty difficult” to do without.

Here's the rub: while your frozen meal may consist of Lean Cuisine-type products with healthy ingredients and low calories, the way you cook your food directly affects the amount of nutrients your body consumes. This common household appliance can significantly zap the nutritional value of your food and your health, leaving you susceptible to developing health complications due to continuous microwave use, and begging the question: is convenience worth sacrificing your health?

Microwaves Zap Food Nutrition

Heating your food in the microwave can strip away its original nutrients. What may have started as a nutritious plate of food has now evolved into “dead food” due to the dielectric heating of microwaves. “They bounce around the inside of your [microwave] oven and are absorbed by the food you put in it,” writes Dr. Joseph M. Mercola, licensed physician and surgeon. The water molecules rotate rapidly in the microwave and in the food in high frequencies which creates molecular friction and heats up your food. This causes the molecular structure in your food to change, and as a result diminishes the nutrient content in the food.

The Way We Think About Charity is Dead Wrong

Q1, If you want to contribute to charities, which charity and which event you will choose? And why?

Imagine a major metropolis where traffic flows quickly on green highways; where streets are sparkling clean and restoration is nearly as vigilant as sanitation; where four main ethnicities (Chinese, Malay, Indian and Eurasian) co-exist in tropical tolerance with a large community of foreigners who live and raise kids without fear of crime or the slightest impolite slight. Parks, museums, art spaces and architectural icons are world class.

There’s a reason — actually a multitude of them — why Singapore ranks high on surveys of places to live and work.

“Singapore is all about convenience,” said Richard Martin, a self-described older expat who works for International Market Assessment. “And it's a brilliant location to cover Asia.”

But there’s always a downside to every utopia. Singapore’s cost of living keeps rocketing — especially in contrast to neighbouring Indonesia and Malaysia— and ranks as the world's most expensive city for 2015, according to the latest data by the Economist Intelligence Unit.

With the news that we're now spending more time on our phones than with our significant others, it might be time to think about reducing our screen time.

In fact, 62% of recently polled Brits said they hate how much time they spend on their phones. If you also wish you were less addicted to your device, we might be able to help.

here's no better time to start than now — beginning at sundown on March 6 through sundown on March 7 is the National Day of Unplugging. It started out as a project from Reboot, an organization that "affirms the value of Jewish traditions and creates new ways for people to make them their own." It's an outgrowth of Reboot's Sabbath Manifesto, which encourages people to unplug from their phones and tablets in order to better connect with the world around them.
