How big can a building be and still be certified green? The answer is, very big indeed, as the Taipei 101 building in Taiwan–home to more than ten thousand tenants–has just received LEED Platinum certification in the Existing Building Operation and Maintenance (EBOM) category from the U.S. Green Building Council, making it the tallest green building in the world (at least until this one gets built.)
The skyscraper (which was formerly known as the Taipei World Financial Center) stands 1,670.6 feet and was the tallest building in the world from 2004 to 2010. The effort to green its operations, according to a recent release, took “tremendous man-hour[s] and resources” over the past last two years. Efforts focused on improving indoor air quality for tenants, as well as on rainwater harvesting, which provides 100% of the irrigation for the building’s landscaped areas.
