How big can a building be and still be certified green? The answer is, very big indeed, as the Taipei 101 building in Taiwan–home to more than ten thousand tenants–has just received LEED Platinum certification in the Existing Building Operation and Maintenance (EBOM) category from the U.S. Green Building Council, making it the tallest green building in the world (at least until this one gets built.)

The skyscraper (which was formerly known as the Taipei World Financial Center) stands 1,670.6 feet and was the tallest building in the world from 2004 to 2010. The effort to green its operations, according to a recent release, took “tremendous man-hour[s] and resources” over the past last two years. Efforts focused on improving indoor air quality for tenants, as well as on rainwater harvesting, which provides 100% of the irrigation for the building’s landscaped areas.

Can kindness movements make a difference?

Each week, Elisa Ng trawls the streets of Singapore picking up rubbish discarded by her fellow citizens. She is not searching for treasure hidden in the litter. Her only goal is to leave the city a little cleaner than before.

"I want to encourage other people to pick up a piece of litter every day," she says.

Recently, she chased an errant lorry driver who had thrown a plastic bag from his window. "He looked quite apprehensive and seemed apologetic," she says.

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The Changhua County Public Health Bureau (CCPHB) said yesterday that the remaining food products manufactured by Tatung Changchi Foodstuff Factory Co. Ltd. (大統長基食品), which was accused of impure products and deceptive advertisement, may be tainted as well.

According to CCPHB Commissioner Yeh Yen-bo (葉彥伯), the firm has been found putting different labels on the same line of products. After prosecutors found that the company's cooking oils — including peanut, chili and olive oils — contained no traces of the advertised ingredients following a tip-off, it was discovered yesterday that the factory also produced sesame oil made from flavored essential oils.

The commissioner explained that Kao Cheng-li (高振利), head of the company, has produced 134 products with only 30-odd formulas.

“We will get to the bottom of this only when we finish inspecting all of the products. The majority of oils that have been tested now consist of the same ingredients but their labels say otherwise; this seems to be the company's specialty,” said Yeh.
