Apple slices do not a healthy kids’ meal make, especially if they come with fried chicken and a soda. In an analysis of children’s meals at 50 large chain restaurants, the Center for Science in the Public Interest found that 97 percent of the possible kids’ meal combos failed to meet its nutrition standards for children’s meals; 19 of those chains offer no kids’ options that pass muster. The National Restaurant Association offers different standards for what makes a kids’ meal “healthy”; by its guidelines, 91 percent of the options failed. Nine restaurants, including McDonald’s (MCD), Carl’s Jr., and Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen (AFCE), had zero options that met either standard.

“We’ve seen an increase in healthier options on adult menus,” says Margo Wootan, director of nutrition policy at CSPI and a nutritionist. “They get that Americans are more interested in nutrition than ever before; they just aren’t making significant changes to the kids menu yet.” Many meals come with soda or deep fried foods. The most common healthy kids’ entree was grilled chicken, she says, so “if your kid doesn’t like grilled chicken breast with apples, you’re out of luck.”

SINCE the start of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, there has been a large and steady rise in the prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder among our troops. One recent study of 289,000 Americans who served in those countries found that the rates of the disorder jumped to 22 percent in 2008 from just 0.2 percent in 2002.

Given the duration of these wars and the length and frequency of deployments, when compared with other wars, perhaps such high rates of PTSD are not so surprising. Prolonged exposure to a perilous and uncertain combat environment might make trauma common.

But there is another factor that might be playing a role in the increasing rates of the disorder, one that has escaped attention: the military’s use of stimulant medications, like Ritalin and Adderall, in our troops.

There has been a significant increase in the use of stimulant medication. Documents that I obtained in late 2010 through the Freedom of Information Act, and have recently analyzed, show that annual spending on stimulants jumped to $39 million in 2010 from $7.5 million in 2001 — more than a fivefold increase. Additional data provided by Tricare Management Activity, the arm of the Department of Defense that manages health care services for the military, reveals that the number of Ritalin and Adderall prescriptions written for active-duty service members increased by nearly 1,000 percent in five years, to 32,000 from 3,000.

Landing a job is hard work. You must create a resume that will entice a hiring manger to bring you in for an interview. During the interview, you must show the hiring manger why you are an indispensable asset to his department. Then you may need to pass a psychological test to be offered the job. Psychological tests are increasingly part of the recruiting process.

In 1897, a wealthy American businessman named Horace Dobbins began construction on a private, for-profit bicycle superhighway that would stretch from Pasadena to downtown Los Angeles. It may seem like a preposterous notion now—everyone knows Angelenos don't get out of their cars—but at the time, amidst the height of a pre-automobile worldwide cycling boom, the idea attracted the attention of some hugely powerful players. And it almost got built.

Dobbins was able to win the support of an ex-governor of California, who in turn strong-armed a nay-saying legislature to get the bike highway approved. It was officially dubbed the California Cycleway. Here's a Google Map of its intended route:

Expert: Paying Kids Allowance Is ‘Cruelty’

The great allowance debate roars on, and may have moved to a whole new level with a personal-finance scholar’s recent assertion that a “regular, unconditional allowance may be akin to cruelty to children.”

As a teaching tool, allowance isn’t just ineffective — it’s detrimental. So says Lewis Mandell, professor emeritus of finance and managerial economics at SUNY Buffalo.

Mandell is a pioneer in the field of financial education, and for a couple of years he has been questioning the educational benefits of kids receiving a regular allowance. In a discussion this week on public radio he upped the ante, saying that paying an unconditional allowance is one of the worst things a parent can do for the personal-finance development of their kids.

Will we ever… understand why music makes us feel good?

A Canadian team of scientists found that areas in the reward centre of the brain became active when people heard a song for the first time.

Why do we like music? Like most good questions, this one works on many levels. We have answers on some levels, but not all.

A few days ago reports emerged of a Ph.D. student who left school to sell fried chicken in his hometown. When Hon Hai Chairman Terry Gou caught wind of the news, he slammed the individual, saying a tax should be levied on people who waste educational resources.
