EMPLOYMENT WORRIES:Many departments have closed or are changing focus due to lower enrollment, due to students’ worries about their future job prospects

By Rachel Lin and Jake Chung  /  Staff reporter, with staff writer

The Global Education Association in Taiwan recently conducted a survey that found that over the past eight years, universities across the nation have closed eight English departments and changed the focus of nine others, showing a declining interest among students in English.

Among the nation’s 161 universities and junior colleges, 126 had English departments, with 50,000 students last year.

So I'm a city planner, an urban designer, former arts advocate, trained in architecture and art history, and I want to talk to you today not about design but about America and how America can be more economically resilient, how America can be healthier, and how America can be more environmentally sustainable. And I realize this is a global forum, but I think I need to talk about America because there is a history, in some places, not all, of American ideas being appropriated, being emulated, for better or for worse, around the world.

How to effectively inspire people is rather tricky, because we all tend to be inspired by different kinds of things.  An artist can see a piece of bark and instantly be inspired by it.  A composer can hear the sound of a chirping bird and create a beautiful melody out of it.  It’s difficult to pinpoint how to inspire people or be inspired by people, but there are tips one can follow to gain inspirations:

1. Show that you care

Small actions are important. You might not be able to stand in their shoes, but at least by showing a little bit of care you can go a long way.  A simple “How are you?”  Or just basic conversations will give this person a little bit of courage and make the world a little warmer.

The Business of Fast Fashion

‘Fast Fashion’ refers to clothing and accessories that are designed to reflect current industry trends, yet produced using less expensive materials to ensure a low price tag. For the last two decades, clothing retailers like H&M, Zara, and Forever 21 have popularized Fast Fashion among everyday consumers. However, not everyone is a huge fan of the trend.

Many designers, for instance, have complained that Fast Fashion has reduced conceptual originality within the clothing industry in order to produce a higher volume of garments and accessories. Zara, for example, churns out 10,000 new items every year; most boutique designers, by comparison, release between 50 and 100 pieces.

So I want to start by offering you a free no-tech life hack, and all it requires of you is this: that you change your posture for two minutes. But before I give it away, I want to ask you to right now do a little audit of your body and what you're doing with your body. So how many of you are sort of making yourselves smaller? Maybe you're hunching, crossing your legs, maybe wrapping your ankles. Sometimes we hold onto our arms like this. Sometimes we spread out. (Laughter) I see you. (Laughter) So I want you to pay attention to what you're doing right now. We're going to come back to that in a few minutes, and I'm hoping that if you learn to tweak this a little bit, it could significantly change the way your life unfolds.

So, we're really fascinated with body language, and we're particularly interested in other people's body language. You know, we're interested in, like, you know — (Laughter) — an awkward interaction, or a smile, or a contemptuous glance, or maybe a very awkward wink, or maybe even something like a handshake.
