Logic would suggest that the more diverse a society or group of people is, the more diverse the friendships within that group would be. Isn't this, after all, why we move to big cities and attend large universities and join Facebook? But a new study finds that the opposite is actually the case.

Researchers at Wellesley College and the University of Kansas wanted to test whether having a larger pool of potential buddies would lead to greater diversity among groups of friends. So they looked at the friendship patterns at two types of universities — the 25,000-student University of Kansas in Lawrence, compared with four small colleges, averaging about 1,000 students each, scattered throughout Kansas.

"One might imagine that a small homogeneous community will lead people to form relationships with others much like themselves, compared to a larger eclectic mix of people," the researchers write in the journal Group Processes and Intergroup Relations. "We predict that the size and diversity of an environment will have exactly the opposite effect." (Italics theirs.)

And indeed that's what they found. At the University of Kansas, students tended to have friends who mirrored their beliefs, values, attitudes and personalities more closely than those at smaller colleges. But, on the other hand, students at smaller colleges tended to foster closer relationships with their friends, even though they were less similar.

The authors suggest that these effects are due to greater social mobility: that is, the more people there are, the easier is it is to make new friends and then move to another social group if it doesn't work out. So people continue to sift through the various social groups and seek out friends who are like them in increasingly fine-grained ways. Sociologist have shown that this granularity can extend as far as physical appearance, or even having the same first letter in your name.

Taiwan could lead Asia with full recognition of gay rights

Last week, a group of university students praised Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) presidential candidate Tsai Ing-wen for her stance on gender equality, specifically pointing out for admiration Tsai's promises to protect gay rights. It is of course, election season. Politicians invariably pander to voters by making pledges that are only sometimes carried out. But Tsai may not have ulterior motives. After all, “pandering” to the gay community might not exactly be a vote-getter. Gay people likely make up less than 10 percent of the population and the percentage of local voters with reservations about homosexuality almost certainly outnumber gay voters. Not much is known about its proposals, but the DPP has promised to release a more detailed “white paper” on the subject of the promotion of gay rights before the January presidential election.

Qouted from :http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/09/22/how-one-small-group-sets-doctors-pay/?ref=health

Despite decades of warnings of a primary care crisis and the fact that some 60 million patients are without primary care doctors, the medical profession has continued to produce legions of specialists.

When asked, most of my colleagues will point to the system that determines how medical charges are reimbursed by insurance, and how doctors in different areas of medicine are paid.

Put simply, our payment system pays more for procedures performed by specialists. Specialists, therefore, have greater earning power, so more doctors choose to train to be specialists. Careers in specialties like radiology, dermatology and neurosurgery offer lifetime earnings several million dollars higher than those in primary care. It is no surprise that medical students emerging from the educational mole hole saddled with hundreds of thousands of dollars of debt choose more lucrative fields.

source: http://www.chow.com/food-news/90365/9-signs-your-dinner-date-is-going-south/

Dinner dates seem like such a good idea: get to know each other in a nonthreatening public place while relaxing over beverages and food. Unfortunately, as the Chowhound thread"Weird/Bad Food Related Dates" shows, they're a minefield of subtle humiliations and egregious cluelessness.

1. Your date micromanages your meal. "This guy kept picking the restaurants and would not let me have any input," says NicoleFriedmanTehamatells of a bad date with a man she calls Third, who tried to force an order of white Zin on her. "Me: Sorry! I will have a Makers Mark + ginger ale please. Third: That is very heavy; she will have something lighter. Me: No! Bring me the Makers Mark. As quickly as possible, please. Third: look of haughty disdain."

2. Your ideas of proper dinner date food are wildly mismatched. "I guess my weirdest and most disappointing food date was in misinterpreting what a set-up date said about 'being particular about his food,' when he invited me to dinner," says mamachef. "I thought that meant he had an educated palate, had some food/wine knowledge, that there was some discernment there. Oy assumptions. Imagine my chagrin when we ended up at Applebee's. His feelings about the place? That they were very very clean, and very very charming, what with all the sporty logo stuff interspersed with fake Tiffany lamps. And that the food was awfully good and had been frozen, so the chances of food poisoning, or lack of cleanliness when prepping, were just nil. In his opinion."LeoLioness had a date with a man who couldn't stop praising his Cheesecake Factory dish: "He used the phrase 'to die for' which is bad enough, but about a chicken pasta dish from the Cheesecake Factory? Really?"

3. What you order turns your date off. "I ordered baby octopus. I don't remember what he got, but for sure, it was not baby octopus," says travelmad478. "After I saw the expression on his face as he watched me stuffing whole baby octopi into my mouth (you can't cut a baby octopus with chopsticks!), I pretty much figured there wouldn't be a second date. Bingo! I think he would probably list this experience as one of HIS weirdest/worst food-related dates, too."

Addiction is a funny thing in our culture -- people who are actually addicted to a substance actively deny it ("I just like to smoke!"), while other people claim addiction for every random thing they happen to enjoy ("I'm addicted to these delicious candy bars!").

But as science gets a better understanding of how addiction works in the brain, suddenly a whole lot of our everyday habits make more sense. Things like ...

Cause marketing has been proven to boost sales, engagement, and customer loyalty, but are the new models of embedded generosity a passing fad or the new fundamental?

Cause marketing has been proven to boost sales, engagement and customer loyalty, but are the new models of embedded generosity a passing fad or the new fundamental? Knowing what we do about the phenomenon in human behavior that is conspicuous conservation, perhaps we can use this notion to our advantage and--more importantly--the advantage of those in need to create a new standard for consumer goods.

Let’s take clothing as an example. Made for Good is a new consortium of like-minded apparel brands, which currently includes Jedidiah, MusiCares apparel, Beautiful Feet, United Artist Network, and Rain Tees, that each use product sales to raise money for charity. There are five key ways that this brand is using conspicuous consumption to the advantage of the brand’s beneficiaries:

  1. Align with causes that people recognize and care about. Each Made for Good apparel brand aligns with a non-profit partner and uses embedded generosity to raise money through the sale of its products. They have carefully selected causes that also have strong recognition, such as World Vision, MusiCares and the Central American rainforest.

15 Signs You're Meant To Be

How do you know if he's the one? Here are fifteen signs.

Even when you're crazy about someone, it can often be hard to know if he or she is "right" for you. How do you know you won't feel differently in a year? Ten years? A lifetime? Deciding if you can commit to someone is a deeply personal determination, and everyone has different criteria. As in any verdict, you have to start by assessing the evidence. With that in mind, YourTango has come up with 15 signs that you're dating a soul mate. You don't have to check off all of these points to be sure about someone—but if you can say yes to several, you've found someone very special.
